2009-2010 ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Krystal Patton
Chilhowie advanced to the state semi-finals Krystal Patton’s sophomore year with a team led by then senior Emily Doane. The team was overall senior laden except for starters Heather Hash and of course Krystal Patton. Few would’ve thought in just two short years, Krystal would lead the way for the Warriors yet again to another appearance in Richmond.
Krystal Patton, Courtest of the Bristol Herald Courier
She scored all of Chilhowie’s first half points in the state semi-finals this year in a gutsy performance that eventually led to a narrow loss for the Warriors. She finished with 26 points in that game and averaged 21.7 points over her final nine games after a slow start to the season due to injury. She also made the game winning layup in the Hogo vs. SWVA All-Star basketball game this past March in a come-from-behind thriller in which she scored 23 of the Hogo’s 37 points.

Krystal has not only excelled on the basketball court. She also led the Warriors to a regular season championship in volleyball as well. She also found her place in the state record books for kills in a single game with 31 against George Wythe. That is tied for 2nd all-time in single-A.

Patton plans to continue her career in basketball at Lenior-Rhyne University located in Hickory, NC. Her efforts from this season gave her a mention on the Pappy Thompson nominee list, an amazing accomplishment for any local high school athlete.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Brandon Atwell
When most think of Brandon Atwell they think of a jersey with a blurry “21” on it. It’s blurry because it’s moving so fast and it’s moving so fast because you can’t catch him.

Brandon Atwell, once the “alpha-receiver” for George Wythe’s all-time record holding quarterback Jacob Sharitz, had to make the transition last summer from his usual position at wide receiver to a new position in a new formation under a new coach.

Let’s just say that Atwell is open to change and that change led him to a school record setting 25 touchdowns in a single season for George Wythe. In a game against Northwood, it took Atwell only six carries to rack up 192 yards rushing and three scores.

2008-2009 ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
|
Making history.
Last year Kendra Nutter was voted as the 2007-08 Female Athlete of the Year and made history for HogoOnline's innaugural contest. In 2008-09 she's done it again with the help and support of HogoOnline viewers. The race between Nutter and Buckhannon was so tight at some points, I was concerned there would have to be yet another playoff vote! In the end, Nutter managed to pull through and has won a consecutive Athlete of the Year award. Nutter will continue to make history for herself when she furthers her basketball career at Bluefield College next season. Congratulations Kendra.
Ashley Buckhannon dominated this basketball season and capped off a stellar career on the hardcourt while freshman phenom Morgan Lowe did most of her damage on the softball mound and helped turn Holston's softball program completely around. But Nutter was a pivotal force for her volleyball team, basketball team, and her softball team which again lands her at number one by those of you who voted.
Lets take a moment and recount Kendra's most amazing feats from this past season.

MALE ATHELETE OF THE YEAR
|
The 2008-2009 male athlete award was between three of the most explosive athletes to come through the Hogoheegee in a long while. The three finalists were by far the most talked about athletes for each sport they suited up for and deserved the recognition and honor of being recognized as finalist in this contest.
Congratulations to Eric Mefford on being voted the 2008-09 Male Athlete of the Year by users of Hogoheegee.com!! Eric helped make history for Holston when he led his team to it's first ever Region C championship in football. Mefford also led the Hogoheegee district in total rushing yards.
Ronnie Groves and Curtis Williams each played crucial roles for their respective teams and leave the Hogoheegee having garnered very impressive high school resumes.
Boasting speed, heart, and determination, it is easy to see why an athlete like Mefford would be voted as the overall male athlete. Lets take a moment to recount some of his most amazing achievements this past year.
