2007-2008 ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

This year's Female Athlete of the Year award was no surprise. Northwood's finest female athlete won the vote by a landslide margin capturing HogoOnline's innaugral title as the 2007-2008 Queen of Hogoheegee.

Kendra Nutter's achievements are superb for a junior from one of the smaller district high schools. This past season she was a leader in every sport she suited up for and with one more year of Hogoheegee contention remaining for Nutter, the 11th grader is ready for another season of terror upon her opponents.

Nutter's achievements include, but are not limited to:

*First Team All-District Volleyball and All-Region C Honorable Mention

*Second Team All-HogoOnline Basketball

*First Team All-District Basketball and Second Team All-Region C

*First Team All-District Softball

*Nutter led the Northwood Lady Panthers' basketball team to a 12-15 record which included a state tournament appearance in the division one bracket.

*Nutter scored her 1,000th point against Narrows in the first round of the Region C tournament

*Nutter was a member of the Northwood Lady Panthers' softball team who finished second in the district this past season and advanced to the Region C tournament.

MALE ATHELETE OF THE YEAR

The final ballot total for the male side of things was a bit tighter than the females. The 2007-2008 season featured many great contests, moments, and feats - many of which surrounded George Wythe athletes. George Wythe reached the Region C tournament in every male team sport they participated in (football, basketball, baseball, soccer) and won the region in football and basketball. The Maroon men were also a part of the first ever Division 2 Group A State Basketball championship. Led by Devin Smith, Robert Yonce, Will Sawyer, Brett Grimes, Ethan Mills, Brandon Davis, and several others from a strong bench core, the Maroons breezed through their schedule and right into the record books. But it was Tennis Simon who led the stat column with 17.7 ppg, and 5.4 rebounds per game that made a major impact on the success of Al Copenhaver's last basketball team.

The Maroons will surely miss the likes of such a standout athlete next season when Simon, as well as fellow team-mate Ethan Mills, will be playing for Bluefield College.

Simon's achievement's include, but are not limited to:

*Simon was a member of the Region C champion George Wythe football team

*Bristol Herald Courier Southwest Virginia Boy's Basketball Player of the Year

*Simon was a member of the SWVA All-Star basketball team

*Boys Basketball All Hogo-Online First Team Center; All Hogo-Online Player of the Year

*Boys Basketball All Hogoheegee First Team; All Hogoheegee Player of the Year
