Even if you were not yet born while he soared by defenders, threw down vicious dunks, and dominated the entire district on the court, you've likely heard stories or caught wind of Castlewood's Calvin Talford. Talford finished his career with 1,559 career points and once scored 59 in a game against Chilhowie, a game in which he hit 25 field goals and threw down five dunks. Talford scored 741 points alone in his senior season, pulled down 356 rebounds, and threw down 54 dunks. Again, all in his senior season. For his career, Talford pulled 922 rebounds and dunked 93 times.
After Castlewood, Talford went on to star for ETSU where he gained nationwide notoriety for winning the NCAA slam dunk competition.
Talford was a success at ETSU from 1989-1992.
Given the state of Hogoheegee basketball in this day and age, it's hard to believe someone around had the talent to do this... (Also pay attention to the number of fans that went to games back then..)
Talford even competed in the NBL Slam Dunk Contest.
Aside from basketball, Talford also holds VHSL records for track including single A triple jump (49'8.25") and high jump (7'0").
Talford went on to play eight years professionally overseas and even had a two year stint in minor league baseball. No voting was necessary for who to induct into the first round of the Hogoheegee.com Hall of Fame. There is simply no disputing it, Calvin Talford set an unbelievably high standard for Hogoheegee basketball that may never again be seen.
By and large the best high school athlete from the Hogo or really best high school basketball player from all of the southwest virginia schools. These videos hardly do it justice either, Talford was such a beast and such an athlete and the rest of the district had some good players too unlike today. PH wasn't even in the Hogo then but I went to a few of his games just to watch him play.
Man thank you so much for posting this and these videos. I'm not sure how many of the other HOF noms have four youtube videos if any but Talford definitely deserves the #1 overall induction. What a freak.
