The wounded Warriors have survived to play at least one more match.
Despite having three key contributors out of the lineup with injuries, Chilhowie was able to gut out an 18-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-21 victory over Holston on Monday night in the first round of the Hogoheegee District volleyball tournament.
Fourth-seeded Chilhowie (14-10) will play Hogoheegee regular-season champion Patrick Henry (17-4) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the district tourney semifinals at Northwood High School.
On Monday, Chilhowie had to overcome a hungry young Holston team and an injury bug that has bitten the Warriors all season.
"Since we’ve started district play, it seems like we’ve had somebody out every [match]," said Chilhowie coach Laura Robinson.
Standouts Ashley Blevins, Lauren Jones and Monica Fields were all relegated to the bench for Monday’s match, while healing from their various ailments.
However, the rest of the Warriors were able to pick up the slack.
"It’s been pretty hard, because everybody’s had to play different spots and learn new positions and accommodate for everybody else," said Chilhowie setter Katie Holman, who dished out 15 assists and made four digs. "But overall, I feel we’ve done really well with it."
Chilhowie relied on a balanced hitting attack. Kelsey Wilkerson (nine kills), Chenoa Shelton (eight kills, three blocks), Haleigh Shupe (eight kills) and Brittany May (five kills) all made big contributions on the front row.
Robinson was particularly impressed with the production of Shelton, a sophomore. Meanwhile, Wilkerson was among the calming influences.
"We worked together and just pushed through it," Wilkerson said. "And we worked as a team."
It appeared that Chilhowie’s makeshift lineup would be in for a rough night after Holston won the first game and promptly grabbed a 7-3 lead in the second game.
"Usually we start off strong and then get slow," Holman said. "But we really picked it up, which is a good thing. I’m really proud of how everyone played."
Wilkerson said the slow start was just a matter of many of the players on the court getting a feel for their expanded roles. Once that was resolved, the Warriors took control.
"We started playing as a team and everything started working after we got together," she said.
Holston received 14 assists from Kayla Thacker, while Taylor Doss (six kills, two service aces) and Samantha Roberts (three aces) were also strong in defeat. |
