Twenty-seven seconds into the game Ashley Buckhannon sank a 3-pointer from the right side.

Less than a minute later she connected from long range again.

A transition layup would come shortly thereafter.

Just like that the Radford University junior had pumped in all eight of her team’s points, the Highlanders had an 8-0 lead over the University of Virginia and forced the Cavaliers to call a 30-second timeout.

Virginia would eventually collect a 92-43 women’s basketball win on Sunday, but the contest produced another highlight for Buckhannon in a season that has been marked by personal accomplishments.

Buckhannon finished with 14 points, marking the seventh time in 10 games the former George Wythe High School star has scored in double digits. She’s averaging 13.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per contest this season for the 6-4 Highlanders.

Patton’s progress

Chilhowie High School graduate Krystal Patton is averaging 4.5 points and 2.0 rebounds per game for the Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) women’s basketball team.

The sophomore had nine points, six rebounds and two steals in an 89-41 beatdown of St. Andrews on Dec. 5.

Waugh’s work

Kenneth Waugh is having a productive season for the men’s basketball team at Bridgewater College.

The former George Wythe High School standout is averaging 6.6 points per game and fired in a season-high 16 points on Nov. 30 in a 93-78 loss to Randolph.

Brandon’s bowling

Ohio University earned the first bowl victory in the history of the school’s football program on Saturday night, collecting a 24-23 win over Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise.

Redshirt freshman Brandon Atwell (George Wythe) saw time on defense and special teams this season for Ohio.
