In Thursday’s other semifinal, Hogoheegee regular-season champion George Wythe raced out to an 11-0 lead and never let Holston get within eight points the rest of the way.

All 12 players on George Wythe’s roster scored, with 6-foot-4 junior Hardy Lester (17 points) and Isaac Baltazar (10 points) leading the way.

The Maroons’ advantage ballooned to as much as 31 points in the second half.

“I’m really proud of them,” said George Wythe coach Joey Russell. “We played our type of basketball and everybody contributed.”

The game’s most memorable moment came when GW senior Mitch Castanon hit a buzzer-beater from long-range just as the third-quarter buzzer expired. Castanon took last season off from basketball, but has returned and taken on the role of defensive stopper for the Maroons.

“I’m proud of Mitch,” Russell said. “He’s our Energizer bunny rabbit. He’s not afraid.”

Tyler Smith led Holston with 11 points.
