Seven months ago, Kasey Uecker was on crutches thanks to a serious knee injury.
These days she’s pain free and making major contributions for the Patrick Henry High School volleyball team.
Uecker dished out 14 assists and supplied plenty of hustle as PH overpowered Chilhowie for an important 21-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 Hogoheegee District win on Thursday night.
Uecker showed no ill effects of the injury that occurred in a game against Chilhowie in the finals of the Hogoheegee District girls basketball tournament back in February.
"It’s been over six months now and it’s doing pretty good," Uecker said. "I don’t feel it much anymore. … It was pretty disappointing to me, but I got over it."
The rehabilitation of the injury hit no snags.
"It went pretty well," Uecker said.
Things are going pretty well for the sophomore now as she’s emerged in an important role for the Rebels, sharing the setting duties with Megan Cleary. Uecker and Cleary (22 assists) did a solid job of running the offense on Thursday.
"We started using two setters two weekends ago at a tournament, so we wouldn’t wear the other setter down. It started working so well," said PH coach Beth Matlock Austin. "It gives everybody a chance and our sets are looking awesome right now."
It also doesn’t hurt that Patrick Henry’s setters have a pair of 6-foot hitters — Kelsey Weddle (21 kills) and Cadence Wilmoth (11 kills) at their disposal.
"Kelsey and Cadence are amazing," Uecker said. "They block well too. Then we have great outside hitters. I’m really pleased with how it’s going."
PH (7-3, 2-0) dropped the opening game to Chilhowie on Thursday, but pretty much had the match in control over the final three games.
"I don’t think we were talking as much as we should have," Uecker said. "We just got back up and it was all right after that."
Monica Fields racked up 13 kills for Chilhowie, while Haleigh Shupe contributed seven kills. Kelsey Wilkerson led the Warriors — last season’s Hogoheegee regular-season champs — with 11 assists.
Patrick Henry posted a win over George Wythe on Tuesday and looked good in Thursday’s match. The Rebels appear to be in control of the district thus far.
"They are playing more like a team than they have this whole season," Austin said. "It’s starting to come together and they are getting more comfortable with each other. We’re mixing sophomores and seniors with a junior. … They’re getting it." |
