As Megan Cleary stepped to the service line on Thursday night on the cusp of making school history, there was little doubt how she was feeling.

The Patrick Henry High School senior was pumped up.

"Oh yeah," Cleary admitted.

Cleary got off a picture perfect serve that Northwood returned into the net, the final point in Patrick Henry’s 25-18, 25-14, 25-13 Hogoheegee District volleyball victory over the Panthers.

PH coach Beth Matlock Austin said the win clinched the first district volleyball title in program history as the Rebels (17-4, 10-0) completed a perfect run through the Hogoheegee regular-season schedule.

"This is awesome," Cleary said. "We’re just a big family this year. There’s been no drama at all and our fans have really supported us."

Cleary has been one of the selfless stars for PH. She served six aces and dished out 13 assists, while also providing solid defense on the back row in Thursday’s win.

The relentless Cleary was used exclusively as a setter last season, but has split those duties with Kasey Uecker (13 assists on Thursday) this season.

"Megan is like an anchor in our defense," said PH coach Beth Matlock Austin. "She was more than willing to go play back row and dig stuff up and just be an unsung hero for us all year."

Meanwhile, the Rebels’ hitting triumvirate controlled the net. Kelsey Weddle (19 kills), Hannah Doss (11 kills) and Cadence Wilmoth (six kills) were strong as usual.

"[Winning the district] was one of our main goals," Doss said. "We have focused on staying up and just hitting our hearts out."

While Weddle and Wilmoth garner the most attention from the opposition’s defense, Doss is no slouch on the front row.

"She’s come out of nowhere," Austin said. "She’s been a real surprise. I know when people start keying on our middles [Weddle and Wilmoth], her and Katie [Haynes] come out of nowhere and get some kills. It’s awesome."

All three hitters made life miserable for Northwood’s defenders.

"I wouldn’t want to be on the other side of them," Cleary said. "I love setting them."

Cleary put the finishing touches on a milestone win. It also signified the Rebels have a solid all-around group of female athletes – in every sport.

"They come out and work hard every single day," Austin said. "They come out and give everything they’ve got, every game. It’s maybe something we’ve lacked in the past.

"They’re not all true volleyball players. They’re softball and track and basketball players, but they are starting to become volleyball players and that showed tonight."
