Kelsey Weddle is an athlete of few words.

The hardware she helped the Patrick Henry High School volleyball team collect this fall has produced a pretty big statement, however.

Weddle continued her stellar senior season with 18 kills as Patrick Henry dumped Northwood, 25-17, 25-20, 25-15, on Thursday night in the finals of the Hogoheegee District tournament.

The Rebels (19-4) continued the best season in school history and added the tourney title to their regular-season crown. PH hasn’t lost to a Hogoheegee foe this season.

According to Weddle, the goal of district domination was prevalent when practice convened at Patrick Henry in early August.

"We expected it," she said. "We’ve been working for it all year. We knew we had a good chance of winning the district, so we decided to work really hard to make sure we did."

Weddle was at her best in Thursday’s match. When not slamming down a powerful spike, she executed some perfectly-placed dinks that sent Northwood’s defenders scrambling.

While the 5-foot-10 middle hitter is shy off the court, she certainly commands attention on it.

"She’s a tall, talented girl," said Northwood coach Brittany Clear Holley.

Megan Cleary, who dished out nine assists and five aces, has also become accustomed to Weddle’s dominance.

"She works hard in everything she does," Cleary said. "She deserves to be awesome, I guess."

The whole Patrick Henry attack was pretty awe-inspiring to head coach Beth Matlock Austin. Hannah Doss (10 kills), Kasey Uecker (10 assists), and Cadence Wilmoth (six kills) also keyed the near-flawless win.

"It’s nice as a coach when you come out here and you’re not worried about anything because all week in practice they’ve been doing what you ask," Austin said. "When they step on the floor, they just get to play. There’s not a lot I have to correct or fix. They know how to do it and they did it tonight."

Austin flashed a grin when asked about the contributions of Weddle, who excels in four sports.

"She’s had a good senior season for us," Austin said. "She broke the school record in kills. She’s come out strong every game, been a good leader and she came out tonight and did a real good job for us."

Chelsey Cardwell and Kristin Dean combined for 19 kills to lead Northwood, while Summer Frye dished out 23 assists. The Panthers went 0-3 against Patrick Henry this season.

"They’ve got some really good players and I think one thing they have is amazing heart," Holley said. "I think three times they wanted it more and they played like they wanted it more."

Patrick Henry now prepares for the Region C, Division 2 tournament, which gets underway Monday.

"We’re kind of nervous, but at the same time, we’re going to work hard and make it happen," Cleary said.
