BIG STONE GAP, Va. – Cadence Wilmoth is indeed a scoring machine.
But there’s more to the Patrick Henry High School senior’s game. Much more.
Crashing the boards and swatting away shots with reckless abandon, Wilmoth put together another five-star performance as PH posted a 61-32 non-district girls basketball win over Union on Wednesday night.
Wilmoth scored a game-high 26 points, all of which came in the first three quarters. That’s to be expected.
She also hauled down 16 rebounds and recorded eight blocks.
It was similar to the 6-foot-1 post player’s performance on Monday when she notched a triple-double in a win over Rural Retreat.
For the record, offense isn’t her only calling card.
“I definitely like playing defense,” Wilmoth said. “I know I’m not the best, but I try to get as many blocks as I can.”
Union coach Brandi Collins Bostic can vouch for Wilmoth’s defensive intensity.
Wilmoth’s long arms wreaked havoc anytime a Union player got the ball in the paint.
“Somebody like her, as athletic as she is and as good of a ballplayer as she is, she will alter every single shot,” Bostic said. “That’s why we were able to get some shots on the outside more than the inside.”
Those outside shots were on target in the first half. While Union never led, the Bears did pull within 23-22 with 3:09 left in the second quarter and trailed by just six points at halftime.
The bad news for the Bears was they managed just eight points over the final 16 minutes.
“We played a great first half,” Bostic said. “We hit some shots that hadn’t been falling for us early in the year, but the second half we didn’t hit any shots.”
Kasey Uecker (12 points, six assists), Jaymee Copenhaver (12 points, eight rebounds) and Tyree Wilmoth (seven rebounds), along with Cadence Wilmoth, helped energize the Rebels in the second half.
“We went in at halftime and talked about how our team’s built on defense,” said PH coach Tommy Thomas. “Defensively we picked it up in the second half and changed a few things.”
Summer Begley led Union with 12 points.
Meanwhile, Patrick Henry ran its winning streak to 15 games and the Rebels are perfect in the month of January. Not bad for a team that was once 1-3.
“I think we’ve come together as a team,” Wilmoth said. “At the beginning [of the season] we weren’t really together yet. ... We’re starting to play. Tonight we really keyed in on our matchups and that worked in the second half.” |
