Williams leads Indians over NW PDF Print E-mail

The wave pool that is located near Northwood High School’s football stadium is a popular attraction in Saltville. On Friday night in the small Smyth County town, Rural Retreat’s offense came in waves.

Six different players scored touchdowns for Rural Retreat as the Indians ran their winning streak to four games with a 49-28 Hogoheegee District victory over Northwood.

Quarterback Zayne Williams was the leader of Rural Retreat’s versatile attack. He threw two touchdown passes to talented wide receiver Travis Foster and also rushed for 103 yards and a score.

The 5-foot-7, 185-pound junior enjoys manning the controls of one of Region C’s most balanced offenses.

"No matter where you turn, you’ve always got somebody," Williams said. "We’ve got two rotations of running backs that come in and they run hard and can run over people. We’ve got three really good receivers that can catch the ball. … And my line’s been doing a great job these past couple of weeks. They’ve came out and really been getting it."

Rural Retreat began the season by losing its first four games. However, a 27-20 upset win over Glenvar on Oct. 1 appears to have jumpstarted the Indians.

"It was tough keeping the kids bought into what we were doing, this, that and the other," said Christopher Moore, Rural Retreat’s first-year head coach. "I told them the main thing was keeping faith. Keeping faith in what we were doing and faith in themselves."

Northwood (0-8, 0-3) had a little faith as well after going up 14-7 with 9:11 left in the second quarter. However, Rural Retreat scored five straight touchdowns to turn the game into a rout.

"Northwood played a pretty good first half and we didn’t," Moore said. "We responded in the second half and finished."

There were some bright spots for Northwood, which was led by hard-nosed running back Dustin Clear. Clear gained 114 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 21, 2 and 3 yards. Quarterback Jason Prater added an 80-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Poe for the Panthers, which achieved a season-high point total.

Rural Retreat just had too many horses for Northwood to contain.

"We’re playing hard," said Northwood coach Billy Wyatt. "But when you’re outmanned, you’re outmanned."

Rural Retreat (4-4, 3-0) also received TDs from Lukas Langston, James Marshall, Tyler Caudill and freshman Jordan Corvin. Kicker Ryan Lyall added a 7-for-7 effort on extra points.

The Indians appear headed for a Region C, Division 1 playoff bid and host George Wythe next week in a first-place showdown in the Hogoheegee. Rural Retreat’s steady signal caller was already looking forward to the matchup.

"We’ve got to come out focused and have a great week of practice," Williams said.
